With technology progressing as fast as it is at the present, it is a wonder we do not have a new mass-marketed gadget appearing every few minutes. Personal computers, once predicted to be owned by a mere handful of individuals, are everywhere nowadays. If you are a student a personal computer is virtually a necessity. Accompanying the ever-increasing popularity of the personal computer is a plethora of gadgets and technological advancements. Though it may not be every few minutes, it seems as though every couple of months we hear about a computer with more storage space or a new device that one can connect to their computer.

Some devices that appear on the market are either completely superfluous or not so accessible to the entirety of the population, whether it is because of their cost or their limited supply. The costly devices are reserved to those who can afford them, until some new gadget replaces them and the price of these machines decreases, much like any new technology that appears on the market. Those gadgets, which are unnecessary, are not overly practical and the market for these creations is comprised mainly of those with an affinity for such devices. Inventions like webcams, while they are certainly fun to play with, are essentially unnecessary as they have no bearing on the actual operation of the computer and are used largely for leisure computer activities.

The more purposeful advancements in computer technology revolve around those, which increase the computers ability to manage certain tasks and those, which increase the storage space of the computer. Many personal computer owners find themselves craving more space to store songs or various other files and often wishing that their computer were faster. Though many computers produced today have a excessive storage space, that is, it is nearly impossible to fill a personal computer to capacity, these types of advancements permit a much speedier and more efficient functioning computer.

It is amazing how fast we go from one computer to the next, needing more memory, more speed, but never finding enough. It is this demand that keeps the computer world humming along well past many other products on the market. Each new model that comes out has a new feature, a new gadget to go along with it. But, what type of computer do you need is the real question. To answer it, we need to explore what we use these fast running machines that have taken over our lives so quickly.

For many, it s the computer s programs that we need so vitally. Programs are what make our lives easier after all and having the perfect ones to organize, design, and basically work for us is just the way of the world these days. Some programs run with higher demands for memory and internet capabilities. In order to have that, yes, we need yet another fast moving machine to sit on the desk.

Other features that have become vital to computers in our lives include the wireless industry. Remember the thrill we all had years ago when the first wireless phones came out? Now the trend is for wireless keyboards and adding a wireless mouse doesn t hurt either. Others include features for burning CD s and watching DVD s. There are probably hundreds of additional features not listed here.

Even more important has become the overall look of the computer. Just as televisions have, computers have slimmed down monitors with LCD screens that make images clearer and more real life. The demand is huge for laptops that can be carried from place to place often being thinner than most people s daily planner.

Encompassing all of this, it is up the each individual to determine his or her needs in a computer. Just like anything else within our lives, we all want the biggest and the best. But, it can be costly to have all of these features. Instead, chose the ones that fit your needs the most. Then comparison shop for the right company. Computers are a way of life, there is little doubt of that. To keep up to date, you might want to head over to that internet warehouse full of potential computers for your desk. Hey, you might even get to build your own!

If you ve been downloading programs and stuff from the Internet, you must have come across the term shareware and freeware at one point in time. Most of us don t know the difference between shareware and freeware. Freeware is pretty easy to explain…it s free to use, that s all there is to it. Freeware is developed by an individual or a small company for the free use of others. Freeware and shareware are often downloadable from the Internet from sites like www.download.com.

Well, a shareware is actually a software developed by an individual or a company for a public domain that is available for use for a small fee. This small fee that we re talking about is usually a very small, one-time-fee that won t be more than what your dinner would cost. Depending on the developer of the shareware, usually sharewares are pretty funky and efficient. Because most of these shareware developers are not restricted with stringent rules and boundaries (and red tapes) like large software development companies, they are free to develop the shareware to meet with the demands of people like them. And often times, sharewares are pretty good.

Sharewares, unlike freewares, are protected by copyright laws. Usually, you can download the shareware from the internet for free use for a short period of time. This is called the demo or evaluation period. If the evaluation period is 15-days, you can freely use the shareware for 15 days without paying anything and when the 15 days is over, the shareware will automatically be disabled. You ll need to pay the registration fee to continue using the shareware program. Once you ve paid and registered the shareware, you re eligible for technical assistance and upgrades.

You can copy and share the shareware with your friends and family but they would have to go through the same thing you have. Sharewares, remember, are not free. If they don t register the shareware, they won t be able to use the shareware when the evaluation period is over.

Sharewares are generally safe to use but there are those who embed harmful files into their download folders. When downloading sharewares, take a good look at the developer and check their background. The shareware developer should have a good reputation and a long history of developing shareware. Some unscrupulous people actually place adwares, malwares, worms, and spywares into the shareware. So, be careful.

Mobile Computing users (people that use laptops, PDAs, and Smartphones) have one thing in common and that is they all use batteries to power their device. When considering a battery purchase most mobile computing users seek to find the answer to one of the following questions if not all (questions of which relate to the battery) the questions are:

What does the life of the battery mean? How is battery life measured? What factors determine battery life? When does the battery begin to lose life? What factors shorten battery life? Is it better to buy a long life battery?

In part 1 of this article series let s look at the meaning of battery life how battery life is measured what factors determine battery life and finally when do batteries begin to lose life.

What does the life of the battery mean?

Battery life is the term that is often used when we speak about how long a battery can last (other terms we often use when speaking about battery life is battery capacity, battery runtime, battery mAh, battery milliamp rating, and battery playtime). All these terms speak about the life of the battery - how long the battery will power my PDA (or other mobile computing device) before I have to recharge.

How is battery life measured?

Battery life is a measurement of capacity. What is Battery Capacity? Battery capacity is a reference to the total amount of energy stored within a battery. Battery capacity is rated in Ampere-hours (AH), which is the product of:

AH= Current X Hours to Total Discharge

What factors determine battery life?

The duration of the battery charge is governed by five factors including:

Physical Size - the amount of capacity that can be stored in the casing of any battery depends on the volume and plate area of the actual battery. The more volume and plate area the more capacity you can actually store in a battery.

Temperature - capacity, or energy stored, decreases as a battery gets colder. High temperatures also have an effect on all other aspects of your battery.

Cut off Voltage - To prevent damage to the battery and the device, batteries have an internal mechanism that stops voltage called the cut-off voltage, which is typically limited to 1.67V or 10V for a 12 Volt battery. Letting a battery self-discharge to zero destroys the battery.

Discharge rate - The rate of discharge, the rate at which a battery goes from a full charge to the cut off voltage measured in amperes. As the rate goes up, the capacity goes down.

Battery History - Deep discharging, excessive cycling, age, over charging, under charging, all reduce capacity. Note charging your battery 1 time will reduce capacity as much as 15%-20% depending on your battery s chemistry.

When does the battery begin to lose life?

A battery begins to lose life the very moment is used. Let s clarify a little more so that we are clear with what that technically means! A new battery is NOT: a battery that was charged, connected to a device, been opened from its wrapping or chemically activated in any way. Now be very careful with any assumption you may have where a battery could still be considered new even after it was charged, connected to a device, been opened from its wrapping or chemically activated in any way. Why?

Inside the battery itself is a system designed to produce a chemical reaction. The chemical reaction is designed for a single purpose: to create an electron flow (i.e. electricity) by which the device is powered. The electron flow is measured (or moves at speeds) in amperes, where 1 ampere is the flow of 62,000,000,000,000,000,000 electrons per second! Therefore once the chemical is activated and the flow of electrons takes place, even for a second, then the loss of power and battery degradation begins and there is no stopping it. Once battery degradation begins a battery is considered used and its natural life will deplete in a matter of time.

One note is that a battery only need be connected to a device or have its connectors touched to effectively create a closed circuit for the chemical to potentially activate, at which point of course the battery life will begin to deplete.

In part 2 of the article on Battery life we will look at the factors that shorten the battery life and whether it is better to buy a long life battery or a lesser capacity battery.

As a provider of computer consulting services, you should communicate to your clients that a dedicated server generally can enforce strong user passwords. This means your clients can:

-	Force users to change passwords at predetermined intervals

-	Prevent recycling of previously-chosen passwords

-	Eliminate the use of blank passwords

-	Enforce selection of passwords that are a mixture of both letters and numbers, as well as upper and lower case characters

Protection Against “Accidental” Reboots

When a PC is used in a peer-to-peer network as both a server and a workstation, sooner or later the server will get rebooted accidentally - no matter how careful the server s primary user is.

Let your computer consulting services clients know that whether the peer-to-peer server gets rebooted as a result of installing a new piece of software, or a buggy application with memory leaks causes system crashes, sooner or later their employees will be livid when the server goes down without warning.

This will likely cause corrupted data files and lost hours of collective work in progress. A dedicated server system is a simple way to prevent this enormous potential problem.

Centralized File Protection

With a peer-to-peer network, servers tend to sprout up throughout your computer consulting services clients office as multiple end users set up file and printer shares on their own PCs.

With a client/server network, files are centrally protected from data loss and corruption resulting from hardware faults, accidental deletion, power problems, hacking, sabotage, and virus threats.

Don t Forget Back Up Solutions

As their computer consulting services provider, communicate to your clients that conversely in a peer-to-peer network environment, with decentralized file storage, they should consider how crucial data files will be backed up.

Will data backup be a manual process? Will an external tape backup drive get passed from user to user (requiring each end user to take initiative)?

The Bottom Line about Computer Consulting Services

When providing computer consulting services, have clients consider how often antivirus definitions will get updated on each server. And don t forget to think about whether each peer-to-peer server has a UPS (battery backup unit) capable of unattended shutdown if power is lost, when no one is around to manually and safely shutdown the “server”.

It s possible that advances in the Windows Mobile OS are somewhat dependent on the gaming community.

We certainly have a few innovations that warrant a robust, stable OS capable of high-level API coding to partake of the best of the Pocket PC gaming realm.

The desktop PC owes a debt of gratitude to gamers. Unless, of course, you think that the user base was doing nothing else but playing with their MS Office apps on a routine basis.

The large drive towards hardware and processing power innovation is driven by folks largely like myself.

Video card manufacturers like ATI and nVidia have been posting record sales of high-end 3D hardware acceleration cards for years, with desktop PC gamers more than willing to pony up over $600 CDN on the next massively multipipelined hardware behemoth.

The Windows Mobile world can hardly be called a parallel gaming universe.

A lot of frustration has been thrown Microsoft s way, largely because of recent developments. The hx4700 is a case in point.

Hewlett Packard s only VGA display handheld was hampered by a revelation: no Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade could be issued for this device until the following spring.

You ll find more details on the Brighthand.com site regarding this upgrade insight.

Problem is, the mettle of the hardcore Pocket PC game community is lacking. A recent poll off of the IPaqHQ forum site revealed that only just over five percent have opted for a Pocket PC with Windows Mobile 5.

The greater majority is still on WM 2003 Second Edition. The Pocket PC game community has spoken, and by and large they are satisfied with the game power harnessed by devices utilizing this brand of operating system.

The Windows Mobile Team Blog entry was an epiphany of sorts. Mike Calligaro s Windows Mobile article blog spoke to issues concerning disparaging Micro$oft detractors who insist on transposing those dollar signs in the middle of the company name.

His formula is as follows:

(Total cost of doing the upgrade) / (number of people who will use it) = (unreasonable price)

In essence, he attributes our PDA gaming community upgrade woes to diseconomies of scale, not greed.

I agree with Mike s view because the dearth of hardware accelerated Pocket PC games speaks volumes.

The newer accelerated titles like GeoRally EX are less prevalent than new software rendered 3D titles like FFRace - Fast Future Race.

Even more revealing the former is targeted once again towards Axim x50v owners. If that in itself doesn t reek of a lack of PDA hardware compliancy, I don t know what does.

I ve dubbed this the PlayStation 2 syndrome: just like the popular gaming console, Pocket PC game developers are catching on to making the most of the programming libraries at hand and producing top-notch games that can be used from Pocket PC 2002 onwards.

With such a broad compatibility demographic, I ve already seen it Pocket PC game production is issuing better games for common operating systems and is possible nearing its zenith for quality.

If things continue like this it will certainly put a crimp on our future Windows Mobile upgrades.

New users of the Play Station Portable (PSP) usually can t stay put
about their PSPs. They know it does a lot of things besides play games,
like play music. Short of an onscreen touchpad keyboard and some PDA
software, the PSP is actually all you need as a gamer on the road. Let s
go over how you can transfer mp3 to PSP. This is probably the most detailed
article you ll ever see on the Internet. So pay close attention.

You ll have to be familiar with the PSP controls, of course. And given the time
you will be spending with your PSP, playing with it and exploring it, you will.
Check to make sure your PSP has the latest firmware version 2.60 or
higher, so it can play mp3s, mp4, wav, atrac3plus, and wma files. This is
important, because if you have firmware lower that 2.60, you will not be able to
play the music formats mentioned.

Next, use Memory Stick Duo and not the Memory Stick Pro Duo. The former is
better for playing music files than the latter. Ok, then, you will also
need some equipment–a PC or a Mac, a memory stick, and a USB cable that has a
mini-b connector at the end. Now, you re about to begin your transfer mp3 to PSP.

Insert the memory stick into the slow at the left side of the PSP. The
number of songs you can store on your PSP actually depends on how big your
storage device is. That means, how big your memory stick is. Once you have
inserted the USB, turn the PSP on. Connect the USB s other end to your PC. When
the PSP and your PC are connected, find the USB connection from the settings
option in your PSP. Now, press X. Your PSP will display USB mode and your
computer will detect your PSP as a storage device. You are now ready to Transfer
mp3 to PSP.

Now, just drag and drop music files from your PC to your PSP, just
like how you would do it had the PSP been any other USB storage device. This is
how you transfer mp3 to PSP.

There s more to the PSP than meets the eye. Just click

CCNA exam success depends greatly on knowing the details, and if there s one protocol that has a lot of details, it s OSPF! This is true particularly of hub-and-spoke networks, so in this CCNA OSPF tutorial we ll take a look at some of the more important hub-and-spoke OSPF details. This will help you in working with real-world networks as well, since this OSPF network type is one of the more typical network topologies.

In OSPF, the hub must become the designated router (DR). The DR election s deciding value is the OSPF interface priority, and the default value is 1. It s not enough to set the hub s OSPF interface to 2, however, since the spoke routers must not become the DR or BDR. You must set the spoke interfaces to an OSPF priority of zero.

R2(config)#int s0

R2(config-if)#ip ospf priority 0

This ensures that the spokes will not become the DR or BDR if the hub goes down.

The hub does require a bit more configuration, though. The neighbor command must be used on the hub to indicate the IP address of the potential neighbors.

R1(config)#router ospf 1

R1(config-router)#neighbor 172.12.123.2

R1(config-router)#neighbor 172.12.123.3

It s common to have an ISDN link as a backup in an OSPF network, and when that ISDN link comes up the hello packets must be able to cross the link. What you don t want is to have the hellos keep the link up! By configuring the ISDN link as an OSPF demand circuit, the link will drop in the absence of interesting traffic, but the OSPF adjacency that formed across the ISDN link will be assumed by the router to still be up. (You usually see this command configured on both sides of the ISDN link, but it s only needed on one side. It doesn t hurt anything to put it on both sides, though.)

R2(config)#int bri0

R2(config-if)#ip ospf demand-circuit

A final detail of OSPF hub-and-spoke and demand circuits actually takes place at Layer 2. For the OSPF hello packets to successfully be transmitted across an ISDN link or a frame relay network, the broadcast option must be enabled in the appropriate frame and dialer map statements. Failure to enable this option can lead to a situation where pings will be successful, but OSPF adjacencies will not form.

R2(config-if)#dialer map ip 172.12.21.1 name R1 broadcast 5551111

R2(config-if)#frame map ip 172.12.123.1 221 broadcast

When you re troubleshooting OSPF in a production network or your CCNA / CCNP home lab, don t just look at Layer 3 - because everything s got to be right at the physical and data link layers in order for the network layer to function correctly!

Biometric verification systems are now being used to monitor criminal offenders that are on supervised probation, parole, or house arrest. These biometric verification systems use voice recognition and fingerprint scans to track and supervise these criminal offenders to ensure that they are where they should be, when they should be. While the introduction of this technology brings up concerns about privacy rights in the general public, use of the biometric verification systems actually makes tracking these criminal offenders much easier for law enforcement officials and probation and parole officers.

The biometric verification system can function in conjunction with traditional house arrest bracelets. While the bracelet allows for tracking of the criminal offender, authorities can be fooled if the bracelet is cleverly removed and planted on a dog or other pet. With the biometric verification system, such trickery is easily discovered.

The biometric verification system is an automated system that calls the criminal offender on their telephone at scheduled or random intervals. When the criminal offender answers the phone, or is given the phone call, a number is pressed on the touch tone phone to signify the criminal offender s presence. Then, the criminal offender is instructed to say a phrase. The biometric verification system then verifies the location of the criminal offender through voice recognition technology.

The biometric verification system can also be used independently to ensure that criminal offenders that are on probation or parole are fulfilling their release requirements. Scheduled voice recognition phone calls can be placed to the criminal offender s place of employment to ensure that release requirements of holding a full time job are being met. If a juvenile is being released on the basis that he or she will obtain a GED, phone calls can be scheduled with the biometric verification system to ensure that the youth is indeed at GED classes where he or she belongs.

The biometric verification system has several other uses as well. Those required to take driving classes, check classes, or perform community service can be verified. By using biometric verification in these cases, individuals would be unable to get a friend or family member to stand in for them rather than perform the required service or class themselves. The biometric verification would take place when an administrator placed a call to the system. The individual would then be asked to speak a phrase into the phone, which would be matched using voice recognition technology.

The biometric verification systems being adopted by law enforcement officials, probation officers, and parole officers is quite versatile, and could have many more uses. Should the systems become public, parents could use the biometric verification systems to track their children to ensure that they are indeed where they claim to be. It could also be used to track legal aliens to ensure that they are following immigration requirements.

Here we have the Brother TN-540 toner cartridge which has been around since May of 2004. This toner is designed to fit into the Brother HL-5150 printer which is based a 21 page per minute and 1200 dots per inch LaserJet engine.

This engine is actually and upscale to the HL-1240, using the TN-460 cartridge. The primary difference is that the toner from the TN-460 toner is not engineered to be used in the TN-540 neither the TN 570 cartridge. Yet, the print engines share similar foundations.

The TN-540 is the low yield cartridge and the TN-570 is the high yield cartridge for the following Brother LaserJet printer models:

-DCP-8040
-DCP-8045D
-HL-5130
-HL-5140
-HL-5150D
-HL-5150DLT
-HL-5170DNLT
-MFC-8220
-MFC-8440
-MFC-8840D
-MFC-8840DN

This TN-540 cartridge will yield up to 3,500 pages when printing at 5% coverage on A4 - Letter sized paper. The TN-570 toner cartridge will yield up to 6,700 pages when printing at 5% coverage on the same paper as the TN-540.

Let s get straight to the point, no beating around the bush during this lecture.

First, you will need the necessary Tools &amp Supplies Required:

Tools &amp Supplies Required:

-#1 Phillips Head Screwdriver (tool)
-Phillips Head Jeweler s Screwdriver (tool)
-Small Flat Blade Screwdriver (tool)
-Lint-free Cotton Cloths (supply)
-Toner Magnetic Cloths (supply)
-White Lithium Grease (supply)

Below are your 22 easy steps to know how to remanufacture your Brother TN 540 and TN 570 toner cartridges.

Here you will also be provided with the OEM information part numbers

Part # s:

-TN-540 (low yield)
-TN-570 (high yield)

Step-by-Step “How-to-Remanufacture the Brother TN-540/570″ Instructions:

Step #1:

-First thing first, vacuum the outside part of the cartridge, removing any excess toner. Simply remove the fill plug which is located on the bottom left hand side of the cartridge itself. Deposit the excess toner and vacuum out the cartridge. Be sure that the gear area is spotless. If you leave any toner in the teeth of the gears, it may ruin it and could create a clicking noise. You are better of suing compressed air which will get the job done cleaner and faster. Just keep your hand over the gears so no dust particles get in there.

Step #2:

-The side with no gear, where the static roller is, take off the black spring loaded plastic axle.

Step #3:

-Find the three tabs on the static roller end plate and remove them gently.

Step #4:

-Back to the gear side, remove the two screws that are holding the cover plate and remove the cover plate at that point.

Step #5:

-Gently remove the plastic axle.

Step #6:

-Now take off the e-ring and small gear.

Step #7:

-As for the doctor blade side of the static roller, there will be another small plate. It s located on the end of the roller and inside the plastic wall of the cartridge.

Step #8:

-From the outside wall, locate a small, round hole. With your pointer finger, press the round tab located inside the hole. As you re pressing in, turn the plate up so that the plate and roller are absolutely free.

Step #9:

-You should now be able to remove the static roller assembly.

Step #10:

-Using your air compressed vacuum, clean the doctor blade and foam feed roller. It s not recommended removing the doctor blade because you may disturb the static roller felt seals which are delicate. Once a new blade is on hand, your special care will be needed since you do not want to tear the seals. This would end up causing a leak in the cartridge. The doctor blade is easily cleaned, all you have to do is blow off the excess toner dust and wipe it down with your lint-free cloth. Please make sure you don t leave any lint behind.

Step #11:

-Time for inspection! Carefully inspect the magnetic roller felts. If they are compressed (shiny), then use a small screwdriver to tighten them.

Step #12:

-Now you need to clean your gears, make sure that the fine-toothed gears have no toner on them. This is a good time to check that the gears have enough grease on them. If for some reason the shafts appear dry or the grease is contaminated with toner, you need to clean both the inside of the gear and the shaft.

Step #13:

-Again, clean the static roller with a lint-free cloth. Do not use the chemicals to clean the roller. A nice dry, clean, non-smelly cloth will work just fine.

Step #14:

-Re-install the static roller inside the end plate first. The inside plate needs to be rotated so that it locks in place.

Steps #15 and #16:

-You have to install the small outside end plate and both the spring-loaded white axle and non-spring axle.

Steps #17, #18, &amp #19:

-It s about that time you can now install the static roller gear, e-ring, and white axle. Make sure all the other gears are meshing properly.

Step #20:

-Then, install the gear cover plate and its two screws.

Step #21:

-Finally, you can fill the cartridge with Brother 5150 black toner - 140 grams for the TN-540 (TN-3030) and as for the TN-570 it uses 200 grams of toner (TN-3060).

Step #22:

-At last, you can replace the fill plug. I also recommend cleaning down the toner cartridges in case there is any left over toner dust.

Step #23:

-Test the cartridge. For this cartridge model, there are no reset fuses or procedures the Brother TN-540 or the TN-570.

Congratulations! You ve now just completed your Brother TN540/570 cartridge put together project. This information is provided to you to both educate and improve your knowledge in the technical area within the remanufacturing industry.
